Sea Ranch
We are back from a fabulous trip to celebrate Aunt Virginia's 29th birthday! Someone had the great idea that instead of buying gifts we would all get together for a weekend. John and Robin suggested a vacation area along the Northern California coast just south of Mendocino and Robin found us an outstanding house that fit all 8 of us very comfortably.
The kids LOVED the beach, especially Matthew. He played happily in the sand and and played chicken with the waves. He was somehow completely undeterred by the icy water and chilly air, opting to go pantless rather than wear his wet, sandy sweat pants. Meanwhile, the grownups walked along the wild coast watching harbor seals play in the water or sun themselves on the rocks.
Stewart and I loved having all the extra grownup hands around and the kids loved visiting. We don't have any good photos of Peggy because she was so busy instructing Matthew in the fine art of cooking omelets and understanding when it's ok to play with someone's earring. Aunt Virginia played endless tent games, hide and seek and the Mommy bird game. Stewart and I went on walks and visited all of which was wonderful for us.
Owen remained dubious about the pack and play, even when it was padded. Matthew swore that Owen slept in Gina's bed when they visited her house and didn't fall out, so we let him try a kid bed. He did prefer that to the pack and play but when he was found sleeping perpendicular to the mattress with his feet hanging off the edge we had to end the experiment.
The weekend was such a success that we eagerly await another opportunity for a family trip. Certainly, we need to get to the beach more!
